In Ayurveda, not all oils are created equal. Choosing the right massage oil is not a minor detail — it is the heart of every Abhyanga session. Only when the oil matches your constitution can it develop its full effect.
Vata — the principle of movement and dryness. Vata people often have dry, rough skin, cold hands and feet, and a tendency toward inner restlessness. The ideal oil for Vata is aged sesame oil. It has a natural warmth, penetrates deeply into the skin, and calms the overactive nervous system. After an Abhyanga with sesame oil, Vata types frequently report a feeling of deep grounding and security.
Pitta — the principle of transformation and heat. Pitta people are naturally warm, have sensitive skin prone to redness, and react strongly to heat. Coconut oil is the first choice here. It cools the skin, soothes inflammation, and brings the inner fire into balance. In summer, we at Ayuasana particularly like to use coconut oil — also for mixed types.
Kapha — the principle of stability and heaviness. Kapha people have a sturdy constitution, tend toward oily skin, and quickly feel sluggish in humid and cold conditions. Mustard oil is light, warming, and stimulating. It activates metabolism and brings movement to a system that tends toward stagnation. Safflower oil is also a good alternative.
Mixed types — most people are mixed types. At Ayuasana, we determine during the initial conversation which dosha currently dominates and adapt the oil selection to the current season and your condition.
A tip for home: Daily self-massage (Abhyanga) also benefits from the right oil choice. Warm the oil slightly, massage it in with circular motions, and let it absorb for twenty minutes before showering.
Choosing the right oil is not a science — it is mindfulness. If you would like to learn more, we are happy to advise you during your next visit to our practice in Cologne.
