How Often Should You Get an Ayurveda Massage? Finding Your Rhythm.

How often should you get an Ayurveda massage? An honest, no-pressure answer — and how to find your own rhythm in Köln-Ehrenfeld.

“So how often should I come?” — it's probably the question my clients ask me most often after their first Abhyanga here in Köln-Ehrenfeld. Usually they're still lying comfortably on the table, the warm sesame oil glistening on their skin, and in that cosy moment many would happily book their next appointment right away. I understand that completely. And yet I rarely give a quick number in reply.

Because an honest answer needs a little more room than “once a month.” In this post, I'd like to show you how to find your very own rhythm — without pressure, without subscription-thinking, and without ever feeling that you're doing something “right” or “wrong.”

The honest answer: it depends on you

There's no one-size-fits-all number that suits everyone. How often an Ayurveda massage feels right for you depends on your life: your daily routine, your stress levels, the seasons, and quite simply how much time and quiet you'd like to give yourself. One person enjoys Abhyanga as a rare highlight; another makes it a fixed ritual in the calendar.

In Ayurveda, the self-massage — Abhyanga — is traditionally described as part of the morning routine. In classical texts such as the Ashtanga Hridaya it appears as a gesture of self-care, not as a duty. For me, that tradition is less a rule than a lovely invitation: regularly doing something good for yourself may simply belong to everyday life.

A gentle rhythm for everyday life

When people ask me for some orientation, I like to share what many of my clients find pleasant: a rhythm of roughly every two to four weeks. That's often a lovely spacing — close enough that the soothing time-out becomes a reliable anchor, and loose enough that it never feels like yet another obligation.

Some come every two weeks because they love this quiet island moment in their diary. Others find once a month perfectly right. And still others follow the seasons: an appointment as autumn arrives, one in deep winter, one when Cologne blossoms again in spring. For many, this seasonal rhythm feels very natural — you arrive when something outside is shifting, and consciously grant yourself a pause.

What matters to me here: none of these options is “better.” It isn't about meeting a dose, but about your rhythm feeling light and pleasant for you.

How to listen to yourself

In the end, you are the best expert on yourself. Instead of a fixed rule, I invite you simply to notice: after an Abhyanga, many people feel cosy, grounded, and a little slower than before. Perhaps you'll sense how long that good feeling lasts for you — a few days, a week, two? When the inner calm gently fades and you find yourself longing for that moment again, that's often a lovely sign that a new appointment might feel good.

I like to tell my clients: think of it like a walk in the Grüngürtel or a yoga class — something you do not because you have to, but because it does you good. Some phases of life are fuller and more intense; then it may well be more often. In quieter times, an occasional pause might be enough. Your rhythm is allowed to change, and that's completely fine.

And if something specific in your body is on your mind, or you have health questions, please speak with your doctor. My work is wellness and relaxation — a space to recharge, not a substitute for medical advice.
