Your first Ayurvedic massage is coming up – and you're wondering what to actually expect? Almost everyone does. The questions I hear most before a first visit are wonderfully practical: What do I wear? Do I need to bring anything? How does the oil part work? Here is the complete flow, step by step – exactly as it happens at Ayuasana in Cologne.
What is an Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is the classical Ayurvedic full-body massage with warm oil, and it carries a long history. In the Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana, chapter 5), one of the great classical texts of Ayurveda, regular oil massage is described as a fixed part of the daily routine (dinacharya). The tradition portrays it as a practice that leaves the body feeling firm, smooth and supple – and explicitly recommends doing it "regularly".
What matters for you today is above all the experience: one warm, quiet, uninterrupted hour that belongs entirely to you. Oil, warmth and even, flowing strokes – many guests find exactly this combination deeply relaxing.
I learned Abhyanga in India, at Suryavedam Ayur Wellness in Mysuru, complemented by a PG Diploma in Yoga Education at Kaivalyadhama in Lonavla. Both shape how I work: calm, present, unhurried – in the tradition of Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata.
Step by step: how your first appointment unfolds
1. Arriving and a short conversation
Your appointment begins at the Unisana Praxiszentrum (Salierring 11, Cologne-Südstadt) with a few minutes of conversation: How are you today? Are there areas you'd like me to leave out? Do you prefer complete quiet or soft music? There are no wrong answers – the conversation exists so you feel at ease from the very first minute. If you have any health questions, please discuss them with your doctor beforehand.
2. Choosing the oil: Vata, Pitta or Kapha
Ayurvedic tradition matches the massage oil to a person's constitution: for Vata (dry, cool, light) it names warming, heavier sesame oil; for Pitta (warm, intense) a more cooling sunflower or coconut oil; for Kapha a lighter oil. At Ayuasana this is a wellbeing orientation, not a diagnosis – we briefly talk about what suits you and the season, and choose the oil accordingly. If you have a sesame allergy, please tell me in advance; we'll use a gentle alternative.
3. The massage: warm oil, calm, discretion
The room is warm, and the oil is warmed before it touches your skin. Throughout the massage you remain covered wherever I'm not working – discretion goes without saying. Then the long, rhythmic strokes that define Abhyanga begin: from head to toe, even and unhurried.
In its chapter on oil application (snehana), the Charaka Samhita uses a lovely image: even dry wood becomes pliable when treated with oil and warmth. That image captures the experience rather well – being allowed to soften, layer by layer, while the city outside carries on without you.
4. Resting afterwards
After the massage you stay on the table for a few more minutes, wrapped up warm. Then there's water or tea and time to land gently. This rest is part of the ritual – plan for it deliberately.
How to prepare
- Eat only lightly beforehand. Lying down is less comfortable on a full stomach.
- Arrive a few minutes early. Your time out should start without rushing.
- Keep the rest of the day gentle. A quiet evening suits the soft, settled feeling after the massage best.
- Shower? Afterwards, at home. The tradition's classic order is "oil first, then bathe": in the dinacharya section of the Charaka Samhita, the warm bath follows the oil massage – and a trace of oil may stay on the skin. In practice: let the oil linger for a few hours, then shower warm.
Frequently asked questions about your first Ayurvedic massage
What do I wear for an Ayurvedic massage?
The massage is done on the skin, with generous amounts of warm oil. You keep on as much underwear as feels right for you, and you're always covered wherever I'm not working. For the trip home, choose comfortable clothes that won't mind a trace of oil.
Do I need to bring anything?
No, nothing at all. Towels, oil, warmth – everything is provided.
What does the oil feel like?
Warm, soft, enveloping. Many guests describe it as feeling "wrapped in warmth". Afterwards the skin feels pleasantly nourished.
How long does the appointment take?
The massage itself lasts 60 or 90 minutes; add the conversation and the rest afterwards. Allow a little extra time overall.
What does an Abhyanga cost?
The 60-minute Abhyanga is €90, the 90-minute version €120. If you'd like to come as a pair, there's the Couple Abhyanga – two tables, one shared ritual.
How do I book?
The easiest way is online via the booking page. You pick a service and a preferred time, I confirm personally – and we sort out everything else at your appointment.
Ready for your first Abhyanga?
That's truly all you need to know: eat lightly, dress comfortably, bring a little time – I'll take care of the rest. Whenever you like, pick a slot at your leisure: book an appointment. I look forward to welcoming you.
