Recently, two women sat across from me — both in their late thirties, both exhausted. One was slight, always a little restless, her thoughts already at the next appointment. She spoke of sleep problems, dry hair, and the feeling of never truly winding down. The other was stronger-built, had reddish skin, preferred working through the midday heat, and was now burned out from giving too much for too long. The same complaints on the surface — but entirely different causes. And therefore: entirely different answers.
This is the heart of Ayurveda: you are not like everyone else. You have an individual constitution — a dosha pattern that determines how your body responds to stress, what serves you, and what throws you off balance. The three doshas — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha — are not mystical categories. They are descriptions of energy patterns that manifest in your body, your mind, and your behavior.
Vata — the Energy of Movement
Vata is the dosha of wind and space. People with dominant Vata are often slender, have finer bone structures, and tend to think a great deal — sometimes too much. They are creative, quick, and adaptive. When Vata is in balance, these people radiate ideas and contagious aliveness. When Vata falls out of balance — through stress, travel, irregular eating, too little sleep — it manifests as anxiety, insomnia, digestive troubles, dry skin, and a mind that simply cannot settle.
I often recognize Vata types because during an initial consultation they change topics three times — not from rudeness, but because their mind has already moved on. They get cold easily, have cold hands and feet, and sometimes simply forget to eat. The woman I mentioned was a classic Vata type. Her treatment: routine, warmth, grounding. Sesame oil. Early bedtime. Warm food.
Pitta — the Energy of Fire
Pitta is the dosha of fire and water. Pitta types are naturally focused, ambitious, and well-organized. They are the people who follow through on projects, keep schedules, and often achieve great professional success. In balance they are charming, intelligent, and inspiring. But when Pitta overheats — which happens easily with too much work, too much sun, too much spicy food, too little rest — it shows up as irritability, inflammation, digestive fire burning too hot, and a perfectionism that turns against the body itself.
The second woman was a Pitta type. Her exhaustion was not Vata exhaustion — it was burnt fire. The answer was not recharging energy but cooling: coconut oil instead of sesame, less coffee, more sweetness in the diet, evening walks instead of midday exercise.
Kapha — the Energy of Earth
Kapha is the dosha of earth and water. Kapha types are more solidly built, naturally calm, patient, and loyal. They are the friends who are always there, who listen, who do not give up. In balance they radiate a deep stability that draws others to them. When Kapha slides into stagnation — through too much sitting, too many sweets, too little movement, too little challenge — it shows up as weight gain, lethargy, low mood, and the feeling of being stuck.
A common misconception: Kapha types do not need rest — they need stimulation. Movement, spice in the diet, variety. Massage for Kapha is more vigorous, with greater pressure and drier techniques like Garshana, the dry massage with raw silk gloves.
What is My Dosha — and How Do I Find Out?
Most people are a combination of two doshas — what is called a dual type such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. It is very rare for someone to have only one dosha. Online tests can provide an initial orientation, but nothing replaces a real conversation: How do you respond to stress? What causes you digestive problems? What was your body like as a child? These questions open doors that no questionnaire can.
If you would like to find out which dosha dominates in you — and what that means for your health, your sleep, your food, and your massage recommendation — I am available for an initial consultation at my practice in Cologne. It is not a complicated procedure. It is a conversation that reconnects you with your body.
